The logic is deliberately narrow: a pressure level is a laboratory quantity, while a product page speaks to kitchens, commutes, and workouts. Static pressure is controlled and steady; daily life adds arm movement, warm water, soap film, and seals that age. Copy goes wrong exactly there, when a pressure number is quietly rewritten as a list of permitted activities. It helps to say the quiet part plainly in internal notes: the number is an input to your wording decision, never the wording itself. Teams that treat 3ATM or 5ATM as a pre-cleared scene list tend to write first and check later, and that sequence is how overreach slips through. An ATM rating describes hydrostatic pressure tolerance, not a universal promise that covers every water-ingress scenario.

IP codes

IP codes follow IEC 60529, the international standard that defines ingress protection markings, and each code answers two questions at once. The first digit describes protection against solid particles: a 6 in that position is generally associated with a dust-tight enclosure, which is the meaning carried by IP6X. The second digit describes water: IPX7 and IPX8 point to immersion as the dimension being described, while IP69K is typically associated with high-temperature, high-pressure spray conditions rather than quiet immersion. The code, however, describes how a design was protected against ingress in the system's own terms — it does not tell a copywriter which scene on a product page it covers. One brand, one category, three different markings across two models — because a marking follows the design of each model, not the category it sits in. A copy plan that assumes one water story for an entire line will eventually be corrected by its own spec sheets, so write per model from the first draft. Treat those pages as references for how markings and models pair up, and re-check them whenever a model revision changes the hardware.

Map ratings to your use case honestly

Honest copy starts with mapping, not with the highest number.
Start with the exposures most copy will actually be held to: handwashing, rain, and sweat. A 3ATM marking is generally associated with tolerance of splashes and routine wetting, which makes wording like "designed to withstand splashes, rain, and daily sweat exposure" the honest starting point. Stay conservative even inside this comfortable zone: hot water, steam, and soapy water are not the same exposure as a splash from a tap, and a line of copy that quietly treats them as identical may over-reach. Copy that names a scene should be able to point at the marking, and copy that leans on a marking should know which scenes it is quietly endorsing. A simple self-check closes the loop: if a draft needs the word waterproof to make its point, the point is not yet made.
Swimming belongs to a different class of exposure. Continuous immersion brings moving water, seams working under flex, arms entering and leaving the water, and pressure that changes with every stroke — conditions that differ from the static setting a pressure level describes. A number alone therefore does not translate into an endorsement of lap swimming, and phrasing that implies it may invite exactly the leak-complaint problem spec writers dread. The conservative pattern is to hold swim-related wording out of drafts until a specific model's design and its supplier test records both line up behind it, and even then to write "designed for immersion exposure" rather than a sentence built on a promise.
High-pressure rinsing sits further out still. Pressurized spray loads a case differently from static pressure, which is why the spray end of the IP system — the conditions IP69K is typically associated with — describes a distinct scenario rather than a bigger version of a shower. Keep this territory out of general claims altogether. If a model is designed with that class of exposure in mind, describe what it is typically designed to withstand and anchor the statement to the supplier's documented conditions, not to the number on the label standing alone.
Finally, resist category-level sentences. Two models can carry the same marking and still differ in real exposure, because gasket layout, case construction, button seals, and assembly quality all vary. Practical performance under an identical label may shift from model to model and batch to batch, and that quiet variability is the strongest argument for writing honest copy per model and verifying it per sample round, never per category template.

Verify in samples before publishing claims

Water resistance copy that has not been sample-verified is risk written straight into a product page.
Three boundaries frame the whole exercise. First, a marking is a design reference, not a guarantee: it describes what a design is typically intended to withstand under described conditions, and it does not transfer automatically to every unit, every exposure, or every batch. Second, test conditions differ by model and by production batch, so an observation made on one sample set is not standing evidence for a revised design. Third, the two checks that matter most differ in kind — what you observe on physical samples, and what the supplier's test records document — and neither substitutes for the other.
Run both checks. Put sample units through the exposure scenarios the copy intends to cover, watch what happens, and record the result unit by unit; then request the test documentation behind the marking from the factory and read it against the same scenarios. A sample observation without documentation tells you what one unit did on one day; documentation without a sample observation tells you what a laboratory measured under conditions you did not witness. Neither artifact settles the question alone, and a claim resting on only one of them is a claim half-checked. Where observation and records agree, a claim has earned its place. Where they disagree, the copy waits. Only after that agreement should the draft move to its final gate: review by legal counsel, or against the content rules of the platform where the page will appear.
